Results and Awards Ceremony for name of the "Japanese IYOR 2008 Mascot" "Secondary Mascots" for the International Year of the Reef 2008

From the beginning of December 2007 to the end of January 2008, a contest for a name for the Japanese mascot and for the design of "secondary" mascots was held. 1524 suggestions were received for the name and 694 for the design of other mascots.

On the 2nd March 2008, the name of the mascot and "secondary" mascots were selected during an awards ceremony held at the Shinagawa INTERCITY (Minato city, Tokyo). at this occasion the "cheering squad" for promoting awareness during the International Year of the Reef 2008 was introduced to the public. The winners who ranged in age from 7 to 76 years old attended the awards ceremony.

Kacchi - Chu - So (zooxanthellae)
Winner: Kaori Ishii (Tokyo, 28 years old)		Kanirin (crab)
Winner: Shinichiro Suzuki (Tokyo, 36 years old)		Oni-De (acanthaster)
Winner: Tomonori Atsuta (Osaka, 19 years old)		Jangrass (eel grass)
Winner: Naomi Sagara (Hyogo, 33 years old)
Taiyo-kun
Winner: Ichiro Nakanishi (Tokyo, 7 years old)		Shota (the meaning is a reef boy in Japanese)
Winner: Kyoichi Kobata (Fukushima, 76 years old)
Note: 7 submissions for Shota were receivedm,, thus a drawing was made to select the winner.		Unibo (echinoid)
