From the beginning of December 2007 to the end of January 2008, a contest for a name for the Japanese mascot and for the design of "secondary" mascots was held. 1524 suggestions were received for the name and 694 for the design of other mascots.
On the 2nd March 2008, the name of the mascot and "secondary" mascots were selected during an awards ceremony held at the Shinagawa INTERCITY (Minato city, Tokyo). at this occasion the "cheering squad" for promoting awareness during the International Year of the Reef 2008 was introduced to the public. The winners who ranged in age from 7 to 76 years old attended the awards ceremony.
