- January 18, 2008: IYOR Celebration (Proclamation/Exhibition)
Kicking off the IYOR celebration, Governor Fitial signed a proclamation on January 18, 2008, proclaiming 2008 as the Year of the Reef. CRM and DEQ biologists presented the CNMI's State of the Reef.

- March 29, 2008: Cook A Rainbow (Cooking from our Reefs)
The CNMI held various cooking contests and this year, to commemorate the IYOR, the CNMI would like to feature a reef fish as the main ingredient, in addition to the rainbow of vegetables required. Participants and audiences will learn about food sustainability, role of MPAs and healthy recipes.
- April 11, 2008: Take the Right Route
Everyone has a responsibility to the world we live in now and the world we will leave to future generations. Take a first step to reduce your carbon footprint and "Take the Right Route" April 11th by walking, running, biking, or carpooling to work or school. You will save one pound of CO2 for every mile you don't drive, save money, and maybe even your waistline. [More information]
- April 18th:: Earth Day & International Year of the Reef 2008 (flyer)
- April 2008 (25, 26, 27th): Coral Puppet Show Flame at the 27th Annual Flame Tree Arts & Culture festival
- Ongoing event (Jan-Oct): Mural Painting Contest
Students will have to conduct preliminary research about the coral reef ecosystem and then paint a mural (at identified high-traffic bus stops).
- July 4, 2008: Coral Parade/Carnival
The premier of the non-motorized parade, featuring students, civic and government organizations, and private companies will proudly demonstrate that coral reef protection is everyone’s job by adorning underwater (coral reef) costumes.
- July/August 2008: CNMI-wide Underwater (dive/snorkel) Cleanup
Supporting various dive organizations, the CNMI will provide dive (trash) bag for each diver willing to clean ocean floors (3 dive areas on saipan, 1 on rota and 1 on tinian will be determined at later date).
- September/October 2008: Scavenger Hunt
From ridge to reef, participants will learn about nonpoint source pollution and water quality through an interactive scavenger hunt at Laulau bay. The activity will be featured in the local papers, magazines and TV news.
