On April 9, 2008, the Chamber of the Deputies launched, in Brasilia, the International Year of the Reef in a morning meeting from 8 am until 10 a.m. The event was sponsored by the Parliamentary Front Environmentalist, together with the Commission of Environment and Sustainable Development (CMADS), Foundation SOS Atlantic Forest, International Conservation and General office of Biodiversity and Forests of the Ministry of the Environment (MMA). More than 100 environmentalists and deputies participated in the event in which Maria Cecilia Way de Brito, Secretary of Biodiversity and Forest, gave a lecture about Brazilian Coral Reefs.
In conjunction with the launch of the IYOR campaign in Brazil, the first meeting of the Brazilian Initiative for Coral Reef Conservation was held. It was organized by the Office of the secretary of Biodiversity and Forests of the Ministry of the Environment (MMA), with the support form the Foundation SOS Atlantic Forest, International Conservation. Representatives from the Chico Mendes Institute for Biology Conservation, the Federal University of Pernambuco, the Coastal Reefs Institute, the Federal University Fluminense, the Coral Reef Brazilian Society (Corallus), the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Coral Vivo Project, Conservation International, Bio Atlantic Institute, SOS Atlantic, Ministry of the Environment attended the meeting and met with the Secretary of Biodiversity and Forest (Ministry of the Environment) to discuss about a national coral reef action plan.
